I think the light itself is different in Florence

Modest on the outside, this was the Medicis' local church. "Local" doesn't necessarily mean "humble".  There's an altar by Michelangelo and two pulpits by Donatello, plus a huge number of other artworks.

Wide-angled to death, it looks more like R2D2 in this photo. In a place like Florence where all the buildings are close, that's always a danger.
